Written during Dan Parks’ college years in the early 1990s, Mighty Counselor was inspired by the high-energy harmonies of the bands Petra and Halo. At the time, it existed only as a song idea, and Dan could only imagine that he would one day hear it performed with the full-band sound he envisioned. Decades later, advances in AI-assisted music production helped bring that vision to life.
The title Mighty Counselor combines two of the names given to Christ in Isaiah 9:6, a phrase that came to Dan’s mind while writing the song. The lyrics center on Jesus as both the victorious King and a faithful, forever Friend. Beginning with a dream-like vision of a world in crisis, the song portrays Christ standing above the chaos, overcoming every opposing force and inspiring worship, trust, and hope.
At its heart, Mighty Counselor is a testimony of gratitude and amazement at God’s love. The chorus proclaims Jesus as the “awesome Prince of Peace” who died and rose again to set captives free. The verses also reflect the reality of the Christian journey—moments of uncertainty, spiritual growth, and the longing to know God more deeply despite human limitations.
A recurring theme throughout the song is friendship with Christ. Inspired by Jesus’ words in John 15:13-14, the lyrics celebrate the Savior who laid down His life for His friends and continues to walk faithfully beside them. Ultimately, Mighty Counselor is a song of worship, encouragement, and anticipation, looking forward to the day believers will hear the words, “Well done,” from the One who loves them beyond measure.
